In high school, I remember my biggest fears were what my plans were going to be over the weekend. There were no scandals involving teacher student relationships or sexting during classes. Whatever that means. These days it is impossible to open the CNN website with finding some horrible incident involving high school students. Kids are shooting up their school and bring illegal weapons to class with them. We never even worried about any of these things when I was growing up. The biggest news was maybe who was smoking a joint under the football stadium, but that was the worst of it.
Recently, I was reading a news article on CNN that involved nine students that were arrested for a nine month event that ended in a student committing suicide. She was found hanging in her parent’s apartment on January, 14, after an awful day of being harassed by her peers in school. Apparently the harassment was witnessed by other students and EVEN faculty members.
I remember that girls in high school were extremely brutal to each other, but this draws the line. Girls are constantly putting other girls down and diminishing their self esteem. It was been a problem for decades, but this is unheard of. This is not even the first case of a young female student that was committed suicide directly as a result of bullying.
The fact that faculty member witnessed the harassment and did not report it is beyond me. I think that these employees need to be held accountable of their negligent actions or lack of. It baffles me than a child can be so evil toward another human being that can result in this horrific event.

Back in my high school years, which I’m acting like it was decades ago but really it was 2001-2005. None the less much of the terrorism that has occurred by students on campuses had happened after I had left high school but I do remember that every year I was in high school, so four years there was a death in my class. Not a single class but the class of 05 in general. Anyways two of the deaths were due to car accidents that the student had caused. One involved this girl who was driving way to fast and her car and its passengers were airborne as they hit a hump in the road. She died and it was a devastating feeling to the friends. I also remember a car accident which was the first death of that the brand new school had ever seen. It happened early in the year and it involved freshman getting drunk and crashing there van. Both of these were taken really hard by the class and both could have been prevented had the right friends been in place. Another death was a double suicide that involved guy I knew in class- as a class mate not a friend. He and his friend committed suicide by parking their car in the desert and filling it with exhaust gas. Cops found the car and it was something I had mixed feelings about. I mean yeah it was sad that they had to die like that and that they committed suicide. But on the other hand me and my other friend who knew this guy were pissed that he would go and do this. I mean was his life really that bad at such a young age that he couldn’t talk to someone. These young kids committing suicide when the going gets tuff really made me uneasy.
ReplyDeleteI know, right?
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a weird feeling to think that in reality it was only a few years ago we were in high school and things seem to have changed so vastly?
Why do you guys think that is? Perhaps they truly haven't changed as much as we think they have...or perhaps with the advent of new technologies and an overwhelming comfort--or maybe even laziness--with the Internet kids are facing things we didn't even fathom.
-Next, I'm a big nerd and I always watch CNN when I wake up and before going to bed and they have been reporting a lot on the young girl's suicide. Also, they've spent a lot of time delving into the issue of teen bulling. I feel kind of conflicted about the issue. Of course, there's almost nothing more heart-breaking than hearing of a young kid take their own life. But, some of the accusations I've heard from sources on CNN seem strange.
I've heard claims like, "It's the school's fault." "This could have been avoided if just the school would have cared." I think it's too harsh to place that blame on the school. Bullying is such a blanket issue. I think--no I know--everybody has felt bullied at some point. Sure if it's something blatant adults in power should step in and create justice--shout out to your blog!!! I don't know if this make sense. It probably doesn’t, cause I’m not even sure exactly sure how I feel on the issue. Is it cynical of me to think to some extent bullying is part of growing up?
